Watchung Little League
Summer Baseball 2012

We are receiving many questions these days about the upcoming summer baseball season and would like to address them here.  As a reminder, the Watchung Little League (WLL) does not run, fund or supervise a summer league.  However, we do help sponsor and coordinate summer travel teams from Watchung and assist them with obtaining their necessary registration, insurance, uniforms, equipment, fields and umpires.  We also oversee informal sandlot play for our younger players.

Here is a description of the league and teams from Watchung this summer:

A. The New Providence Green League (NPGL) Program

This is a summer travel league with multiple age brackets that prides itself on being "B"-level, which makes it ideal for Watchung participation.  “B” level means that the level of competition is not as high as some of the “A”-level programs in the area.  Watchung teams have had 7 years of extremely positive participation in the NPGL at different levels, with lots of fun and success.

Teams in the NPGL play upwards of 15 games from mid June through late July.  Half the games are played on our fields and half involve travel to mostly local towns.

The following are the age levels where Watchung teams are being entered:

  1. 12u 50/70: Kids who were 12 years old or younger on April 30, 2012 are eligible to play on this summer NPGL team.   The 50/70 field dimensions are larger than the 46/60 dimensions of Little League and are designed to help higher-performing players transition from Little League fields to middle and high school fields (60/90).  As a result, this is a more competitive division.  The coach of the 12u team is Rob Lister ( ).

  1. 10u: Kids who were 10 years old or younger on April 30, 2012 are eligible to play on this summer NPGL team.  The field dimensions are 46/60, the same as Little League and the rules are similar to the WLL Majors rules.  The coach of the 10u team is John Motta ( ).

  1. 8u: Kids who were 8 years old or younger on April 30, 2012 are eligible to play on this summer NPGL team.  The field dimensions are 46/60, the same as Little League, and the rules are generally similar to the WLL Majors Rules.  Parents interested in their child participating on the 8u team should contact Curt Dahl ( ).

As noted above, because the NPGL is not affiliated with the Watchung Little League, the cost of participation (uniforms, entry fee, insurance, equipment, umpires) will be borne by parents.

Please note that anyone expressing interest in entering / managing a summer team that is not in one of the three divisions noted above should contact Steve Rizzi, WLL President ( ).

B. Summer Sandlot Play

For players in Grades 1 – 4 who are looking to play a little summer baseball, but on a more informal basis than a travel team, we will continue to run our “Summer Sandlot” games.  Summer Sandlot games will take place on a specified weeknight throughout the summer, where adults will supervise games that focus on fun and learning.  More information on dates for Summer Sandlot games will be provided in June.
